Nancy Binay denies backing communist groups: Makabayan bloc endorsement based on agenda

Re-electionist Senator Nancy Binay denied the allegation that she and other senatorial candidates of the Makabayan Coalition were paying millions of pesos to communist groups in exchange for their endorsement.

She was among the nine politicians –including five senatorial candidates–whom a certain “Ka Nonoy” Alcantara, an alleged former liaison officer of the National Democratic Front and political officer for the Makabayan coalition, claimed were paying up to P20 million each to the Communist Party of the Philippines, the New People’s Army, the Makabayan coalition, and other “communist terrorist groups.”

Alcantara’s press statement was published in the Manila Standard website on April 17.

In a letter to the newspaper’s publisher, Rolando Estabillo, and managing editor, Ramonchito Tomeldan, Binay challenged the allegation.

“Thus, to set the record straight, please let me be forthright in stating that in no case was I ever asked for any financial consideration in exchange for any support or endorsement,” Binay said.

“I deny in the strongest terms the allegations made by ‘Ka Nonoy,’ the senator from Makati said.

Alcantara’s statements are “absolutely untrue and baseless,” Binay also said, and challenged the former to substantiate his claims.

She also stressed that the invitation from the Makabayan bloc for her to be part of their endorsed candidates was based on “our common principles and legislative agenda.”

She said that there have been too much lies being spread in both mainstream and social media, adding that she found the allegations, which she said were an obvious red scare spin of attempts to discredit Makabayan-endorsed candidates, amusing at first.

She had, however, decided to respond to the claims after realizing the danger of allowing lies to go unchallenged.

“Allowing falsity to dictate the narrative unchallenged would only contribute to the chaos and hatred that have resulted from the blurring of the line that demarcates truth from falsehood,” she said.
