TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte – Davao del Norte Gov. Anthony del Rosario admitted that there is a mounting clamor for Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) to become a national political entity after the midterm polls.
Del Rosario, founding secretary-general of HNP, disclosed in a media interview that many allies in various provinces wanted Hugpong to upgrade its status into a national party after building alliances with other powerful political parties in the country.
“Last year, napag-usapan yung possibility yung from going regional to national dahil nga marami ngang clamor sa iba-ibang probinsya,” said Del Rosario.
Del Rosario, together with the Presidential daughter and three other provincial governors in the Davao Region, last year established HNP not only in support of the Duterte administration but also “to pursue the ideals of… a strong [Davao] region and a secure life for its constituents.”
The Davao del Norte governor revealed that they have tried to elevate the status of the party prior to the deadline of the filing of certificate of candidacy (COC) last October but failed due to limited time and preparations.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to do it,” he said.
Last week, Mayor Duterte admitted that the future of her regional political entity remains in limbo even after the May 13 polls since she is still not in favor of elevating HNP’s status as a national political party contrary to the consensus of Hugpong’s other top honchos.
The Presidential daughter earlier stressed that the results of the upcoming May 13 polls, particularly in the senatorial race will be a test case on whether or not Hugpong should proceed to become a national political entity.
Latest Pulse Asia survey conducted last March revealed that up to nine senatorial candidates supported by HNP may enter the winning circle this coming midterm elections.
