Filipino first! Roxas wants ‘automatic’ granting of visas to Chinese stopped

Former senator Mar Roxas has urged the government to stop granting visas automatically to Chinese nationals arriving in the country.

In an interview in Catarman, Camiguin Monday (April 22), Roxas expressed concern over reports that the Chinese are stealing jobs from Filipinos.

“Hirap na nga ang mga Pilipino maghanap ng trabaho, hirap na tayo lumikha ng trabaho para sa mga Pilipino tapos bigla nalang papapasukin, automatic, wala nang control, automatic visa yung mga Chinese workers na aagawin ang mga trabaho na kaya naman gawin ng mga Pilipino, nasa construction ‘di ba?” he said.

Roxas, who served as Trade Secretary under the Arroyo administration, said the government should strictly monitor the activities of the Chinese who arrive in the Philippines.

“[B]ilangin natin, ilan na ba silang nakapasok dito, saan sila nagtatrabaho, at nagbabayad ba sila ng tamang buwis tulad ng mga Pilipino, dapat monitored,” he said.

The Bureau of Immigration has been granting “visas on arrival” to qualified Chinese nationals since August 2017. Among those who could obtain the visa are businessmen endorsed by government agencies, as well as local and foreign chambers of commerce; athletes and delegates to conventions and exhibitions.
