House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on Monday broke her silence on the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to veto the P95.3 billion in un-programmed projects from the 2019 budget, saying she respects his decision.
“Well, he’s the President. It’s his prerogative,” the former President told reporters after the Boao Forum for Asia conference held in Shangri La at the Fort in Bonifacio Global City.
“We respect his prerogative,” Arroyo added..
The Speaker echoed the statement last week of House Majority Leader Fredenil Castro on Monday, who said the House would abide by the President’s decision.
“We welcome the President’s signing of the 2019 budget. We respect his decision to veto some items in the budget,” Castro said. “We will abide with the President’s decision and respect the thorough study made by his team after all factors were considered,” the Capiz lawmaker added.
Earlier, Malacañang said the President vetoed the items added by lawmakers to the budget which were not within the “programmed priorities.”
“The President, among others, vetoed 95.3 Billion pesos items of appropriations in the Details of DPWH Programs/Projects, which are not within the programmed priorities,” Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said.
The signing of the budget law means the government can finally fund new projects this year. It had been operating on a reenacted budget since January due to the delay in the passage of the budget measure.
