US afraid of war with China, Duterte says

By Prince Golez

The United States (US), the Philippines’ only military ally, is “scared” of going to war with China, President Rodrigo Duterte said Sunday evening.

Duterte made the remark during the PDP-Laban rally in Agusan del Norte as he explained how the Philippines lost the Scarborough Shoal to China.

“(Former Foreign Affairs secretary Alberto) del Rosario was the only one who negotiated. But America was scared. They knew that a war about something so small is not worth it. Because if (China) hit us and America decides to help, it could trigger a world war. America knows it. Everybody does,” the President said.

“If those nuclear bombs, atom bombs, and hydrogen bombs will explode, nothing will be left of this world. We would all be destroyed. So America said, ‘Both of you should retreat’. Del Rosario ordered our ship to retreat, but China refused to follow. That is why they filed a case,” he added, referring to the Philippines’ arbitration victory against China over the West Philippine Sea.

Duterte raised doubts that the US will defend the Philippines should we engage in an armed conflict with China.

“Will America join us? They can’t even resolve their problem with Iraq and Iran in the Middle East. They’ve been at war for a long time. But who won it? Nobody. Many lives were lost including those of civilians, children, the elderly, and the women. That’s the story,” the chief executive said.
